Why choose a variable-speed filter pump?

Published by Margaux Artigaud

As the central component of your pool installation, the filtration pump removes dirt from your water (pine needles, leaves, soil, etc.). It is also the most energy-intensive equipment: to effectively filter your water, it needs to run for several hours a day, with an average consumption of several hundred watts.

To help you save energy, pool equipment manufacturers like Pentair have developed filtration pumps with a motor frequency variation system. These so-called variable-speed pumps thus consume less energy, as they no longer continuously operate at full power. Here are their advantages!

When to adjust the speed of your variable-speed pump?

A filtration pump does not necessarily need to be used at full power all day long. It depends on several criteria: the number of swimmers, the weather, the frequency of use, etc. These criteria will influence the presence of algae in the water, and the less there is, the less need there is to force the power and speed of your equipment.

A high-speed pump

You should increase the speed of your filtration pump when it's hot and there are a lot of swimmers in your pool, which significantly promotes the potential proliferation of algae in the water.

High-power use is also necessary when you want to backwash or clean the pool with a booster pump robot, or to animate water jets. On the variable-speed pumps we select, programs are already integrated into the filtration pump for many modes of use.

A low-speed pump

If your pool water is already relatively clean, if it is not used much, or if there is no intense heat, then do not hesitate to reduce the speed of your filtration pump. This way, the water continues to be filtered while consuming less energy.

The advantages of a variable-speed filtration pump

Energy savings

It's simple: halving the flow rate of your variable-speed pump means consuming less electricity and thus saving energy (up to several hundred euros per year!).

Efficient pool filtration

The variable-speed pump not only offers an economic advantage: it also allows you to have a more efficiently filtered and cleaner pool than with a conventional pump. Why?

  • Because if the water is agitated too often, algae develops much faster than in calmer water.
  • Because the water passes more slowly through the filter, giving even the smallest particles time to be filtered.

Noise reduction

Another significant advantage is noise. Everyone who owns a classic filtration system knows that it's a nuisance that can disrupt quiet afternoons by the pool. With a variable-speed pump, the noise level can be equivalent to the noise found in a library; peace and quiet guaranteed.

At Pool Planet, we offer the EFlow inverter pool filtration pump, developed by Aquagem. It is up to ten times quieter than other models on the market and twice as energy-efficient.

Increased lifespan

By reducing the operating speed of the pump, you also reduce its wear and tear. This allows you to extend its lifespan and replace it as late as possible.

Environmental respect

A variable-speed filtration pump means better filtration, better quality water, and therefore less chemicals used.
