Winterizing your pool is an essential step to preserve the quality of your water treatment and protect equipment during the cold season after autumn. By correctly performing this operation, you extend the lifespan of your pool, reduce maintenance costs, and facilitate recommissioning in spring.

Why is winterizing essential for your pool?

During winter, cold temperatures and frost can cause significant damage to your pool's pipes and equipment. Applying the correct winterizing techniques carefully will prevent these inconveniences and ensure optimal protection.

Advantages of winterizing:

  • Prevent frost damage: Frost can cause cracks in pool pipes. An unprotected pool can lead to costly repairs.
  • Maintain water quality: Winterizing helps maintain clear and clean water during the cold season, making it easier to reopen and restart your pool in spring.
  • Reduce maintenance costs: Proper winterizing reduces the time and effort needed to get the pool ready for the next season.
  • Protect equipment: Correctly winterizing equipment such as the pump, filter, and accessories preserves their lifespan.

Different pool winterizing methods

There are two main methods for winterizing a pool: passive winterizing and active winterizing. The choice of method depends on your region's climate, your pool's exposure to the elements, and your personal preferences.

Passive winterizing

Passive winterizing involves completely shutting down the filtration system and protecting the pool throughout the winter period. Here are the steps for passive winterizing:

  • Pool cleaning: Start by thoroughly cleaning the pool using a robot or a manual vacuum. Remove debris, vacuum the bottom, and scrub the walls.
  • Water treatment: Adjust the water's pH and add a special winterizing product. This chemical treatment prevents the proliferation of algae and bacteria during winter.
  • Lower the water level: Reduce the water level below the skimmers to prevent water from freezing in the pipes.
  • Drain the pipes: Purge all pipes and equipment to prevent frost damage.
  • Install the winter cover: Use a quality winter cover to protect your pool from debris, bad weather, and UV rays. A bar cover is recommended and preferable to a bubble cover for winter pool coverage and maintaining your pool's good condition all year round.

Active winterizing

Active winterizing involves keeping the pool running at a reduced capacity during winter, while maintaining filtration and basic chemical control. Here's how to proceed:

  • Reduced filtration: Run the pump a few hours a day to maintain minimal water circulation.
  • Temperature monitoring: It is essential to monitor outdoor temperatures. If they drop below freezing, it is recommended to run the pump continuously to prevent freezing. Installing a frost protection control box allows you to automate this process and avoid any risk of frost.
  • Regular water treatment: Even in winter, regularly analyze and adjust pH, chlorine, or other disinfectants as needed to maintain healthy water. Make sure your probes are well calibrated for these measurements or use a calibration solution if necessary.

When to winterize your pool?

The ideal time to winterize your pool mainly depends on the water temperature. Winterizing should begin when the water temperature drops below 12°C. At this temperature, the proliferation of algae and microorganisms is reduced, which makes it easier to maintain water quality during winter.

For saltwater pool owners, winterizing also involves the electrolyzer, with the addition of an empty cell in place of the electrolysis cell. This is also an opportune time to clean your cell using a dedicated cleaning plug and household white vinegar.

What mistakes to avoid during winterizing?

  • Not cleaning the pool properly before winterizing.
  • Forgetting to treat the water with a specific product.
  • Leaving equipment in water without purging it.
  • Choosing an unsuitable cover that does not effectively protect the pool.
  • Waiting too long to winterize, which risks your pipes freezing in case of early negative temperatures.
  • Winterizing too early is also problematic and allows impurities to develop in the water.
  • Draining your pool is also a big mistake as it risks weakening the structure of your pool and its lining (liner, shell, etc...). Lowering the water level below the skimmers is sufficient (passive winterizing).

What products to use for winterizing?

  • Winterizing product: This includes a chemical treatment such as an anti-algae treatment or a specific winterizing liquid.
  • pH regulators: To adjust the pH before winterizing.
  • Flocculants: They help remove suspended impurities in the water.
  • Frost protection control box: In case of extreme temperatures, a frost protection control box is necessary to maintain water filtration and keep the water moving.

Active or passive winterizing?

The choice between active and passive winterizing depends on several factors:

  • Climate: If you live in a region with harsh winters, passive winterizing is recommended. For milder climates, active winterizing can be an interesting option.
  • Work at reopening: Active winterizing reduces the workload needed for reopening as you can leave your pool's filtration running, whereas a passively winterized pool will require significant attention at reopening.
  • Equipment type: Some filtration and heating systems are better suited for active winterizing.

How to prepare your pool for winter?

  1. Clean your pool: clean the bottom, walls, and remove all accessories and floats.
  2. Check and adjust your water parameters and quality.
  3. Apply a winterizing treatment.
  4. Drain and protect sensitive equipment.
  5. Install a suitable winter cover to protect the structure.

What is the duration of winterizing?

Total winterizing lasts on average 4 to 6 months, depending on your region's climate. The end of complete winterizing and thus the restarting of your pool usually occurs with the return of spring. When the water reaches 12°C again, you can restart or increase daily filtration time to welcome the first swims.
