230V/12V Toroidal Transformer for Pool Projectors — 100, 300 or 600 VA
The 230V/12V toroidal transformer is the central electrical component of any extra-low safety voltage power supply system for pool projectors. This transformer lowers the household electrical grid voltage (230V) to 12V AC, the regulatory voltage required by standard NF C 15-100 for all immersed lighting or lighting installed near a pool. It is available in three power ratings: 100 VA, 300 VA, and 600 VA, to adapt to all lighting configurations, from a single projector to multi-niche installations. Each transformer includes a neutral protection fuse, which secures the installation in case of overload or short circuit.
Why the toroidal transformer? Reliability, efficiency, and silence
The toroidal transformer stands out from classic EI core transformers due to its toroidal geometry—a closed ring wound with copper wire. This design offers several decisive advantages for a pool installation.
Energy efficiency is superior: a toroidal transformer converts energy with fewer thermal losses than a standard transformer, meaning it heats up less during operation. This is a significant asset when installed in a closed electrical box, where heat dissipation is limited. Operating noise is also reduced—unlike EI transformers which produce an audible hum at 50 Hz, the toroidal transformer operates almost silently. For a technical room located near a living area or terrace, this acoustic discretion makes all the difference.
Finally, the compact design of the toroidal transformer reduces bulk in the electrical box while maintaining the necessary nominal power. This is why manufacturers like CCEI equip their Piccolo PIMT and PIRF power supply boxes with this type of transformer as standard.
Three power ratings to cover all lighting configurations
The choice of power depends on the number and cumulative power of the connected projectors. You must add the consumption of each projector and select the version whose capacity is greater than or equal to this total.
The 100 VA transformer (dimensions Ø 12.5 cm × h. 6 cm) today covers a large majority of modern residential installations equipped with LED mini-projectors. A screw-on LED mini-projector usually consumes between 10 and 15W—a pool can therefore be equipped with five to eight LED mini-projectors with a 100 VA transformer. Even an installation with two 40W LED projectors remains within the limits of this power. The 100 VA is therefore the economical and sufficient solution for most small to medium-sized residential pools equipped with LED technology.
The 300 VA transformer (dimensions Ø 12.5 cm × h. 6 cm) is suitable for installations with several medium-power projectors, or with a LED/halogen mix. It can power up to 300 VA cumulatively—for example, two 150W halogen projectors, or about fifteen 20W LED mini-projectors, or four 70W LED projectors. This is the intermediate power for medium to large pools with several distributed light points.
The 600 VA transformer (dimensions Ø 14 cm × h. 5.5 cm) is the high-power version for large pools equipped with multiple PAR56 halogen niches. Its capacity allows it to support up to four 150W halogen projectors or the equivalent in high-power LEDs. This version has become less common with the generalization of LEDs, but remains essential for existing halogen installations or for collective pools with a large number of projectors.
Integrated neutral protection fuse: safety and easy diagnostics
Each transformer includes a neutral protection fuse, which secures the installation in case of overload or short circuit. In case of failure, the fuse cuts the power before the transformer is damaged or a fire risk develops.
This fuse is replaceable—if your pool lighting no longer works even though 230V power is present at the control box, a blown fuse is often the first cause to check before replacing the entire transformer. A fuse that blows repeatedly generally indicates an overload (total power of the projectors exceeding the transformer's capacity) or a short circuit on a projector or a damaged cable.
Replacement in a CCEI Piccolo enclosure or custom installation
This transformer is the intended replacement part for CCEI Piccolo PIMT and PIRF enclosures. If your enclosure no longer works and the fuse is intact, the transformer may be at fault—especially if it has been subjected to prolonged overload, mains overvoltage, or high temperature conditions. Replacing the transformer alone is often more economical than replacing the entire enclosure, provided that the rest of the installation (connectors, switch) is in good condition.
This transformer can also be used in custom installations, in a personalized electrical enclosure or to replace a faulty transformer of another brand, provided that the characteristics match: 230V AC input / 12V AC output, and power equal to or greater than the total power of the connected projectors.
Universal compatibility with all 12V AC projectors
This transformer is compatible with all 12V AC pool projectors, regardless of their brand or technology: PAR56 halogen projectors, screw-in LED projectors, niche LED projectors, 12V replacement bulbs. The projector simply needs to be designed to operate on 12V AC—not to be confused with 12V DC (direct current), which requires a different type of power supply.

Frequently Asked Questions about the CCEI 230/12V Toroidal Transformer
A toroidal transformer is a transformer whose magnetic core has a circular shape (torus), unlike conventional transformers with E and I cores. This geometry offers several decisive advantages for a pool installation: superior energy efficiency (fewer thermal losses), quieter operation, compact dimensions, and better vibration resistance. The CCEI 230/12V toroidal transformer converts 230V mains current into safe 12V AC to power submerged projectors, in accordance with pool safety requirements.
The choice of power depends on the total cumulative power of your projectors. The 100VA model is suitable for powering one or two low-power LED projectors (up to approximately 40W each). The 300VA is suitable for multiple LED projectors or a medium-power halogen projector. The 600VA is sized for installations with many projectors or powerful halogen projectors. To size correctly, add the power of all your projectors and choose a transformer whose capacity exceeds this sum by at least 20-30% to ensure a safety margin.
Yes, the CCEI 230/12V toroidal transformer delivers an output voltage of 12V AC, making it compatible with all 12V LED and halogen pool projectors, regardless of their brand. It powers CCEI projectors (Mini-Brio, Gaïa, Nikita, PAR56) as well as projectors from other manufacturers (Hayward, AstralPool, Pentair, etc.). The only precaution to take is to check the total power of the connected projectors so as not to exceed the capacity of the chosen transformer.
The integrated fuse on the neutral line provides protection against overloads and short circuits in the 12V circuit downstream of the transformer. In the event of abnormal overcurrent (short circuit on the cable, projector fault, overload), the fuse blows and automatically cuts off the power to protect the transformer and prevent any risk of fire or equipment damage. This is an essential passive safety feature that requires replacing the fuse if it trips, after identifying and correcting the cause of the malfunction.
A standalone toroidal transformer is a bare electrical component that needs to be installed in a waterproof enclosure and wired by an electrician. The Piccolo PIMT unit is a complete, turnkey solution that integrates the toroidal transformer into an IP55 enclosure with a front-mounted ON/OFF button, connection terminals, cable glands, and mounting screws. The Piccolo unit is therefore much simpler for an individual to install. The standalone toroidal transformer is more intended for custom installations, replacing a faulty transformer in an existing unit, or professional custom installations.
The toroidal transformer has 230V input terminals (primary side) and 12V output terminals (secondary side). The 230V connection must be made by a qualified electrician in accordance with NF C 15-100 standard, with differential circuit breaker protection upstream. The transformer must be installed in a suitable waterproof enclosure (minimum IP55) to withstand the humidity of the technical room. The 12V outputs power the projectors via cables sized according to distance and power, respecting the recommended cross-sections to limit voltage drops.
Yes, all transformers generate heat during operation due to Joule effect losses in the windings. The toroidal transformer heats up less than a conventional transformer thanks to its better efficiency, but it must nevertheless be installed in an environment allowing for correct heat dissipation. Leave free space around the transformer (at least 5 cm on each side) and never wrap it in insulation. If the transformer is installed in a waterproof enclosure, make sure the enclosure has ventilation perforations or sufficient internal volume to prevent overheating.
Yes, it is entirely possible to connect multiple projectors in parallel to the same toroidal transformer, within the limit of its maximum power. For example, a 300VA transformer can power up to 7 LED projectors of 40W each (total 280W, remaining below the 300VA limit). For a multi-projector installation, it is recommended to add a distribution terminal block or a distribution box at the transformer output to properly distribute the 12V power to each light point. Always ensure not to exceed 80% of the transformer's nominal power to guarantee its longevity.
The CCEI toroidal transformer has compact dimensions: the 100VA and 300VA models measure Ø 12.5 cm x 6 cm in height, while the 600VA model measures Ø 14 cm x 5.5 cm in height. Its circular shape and small footprint facilitate its integration into a standard electrical box or a custom-made enclosure. The transformer is generally fixed via its central through-hole using a threaded rod and tightening nuts. It must be installed in a room outside the safety volumes defined by the NF C 15-100 standard, i.e., at least 3.5 meters from the edge of the pool.
Yes, the CCEI toroidal transformer is perfectly suited to replace a faulty transformer in an existing power supply unit, whether it's a CCEI Piccolo unit or one from another manufacturer. Before replacement, check that the dimensions and power of the new transformer are compatible with the enclosure and the projectors powered. The replacement must be carried out by a qualified electrician who will ensure correct wiring, compliance with safety standards, and proper operation after replacement. This is often more economical than replacing the entire unit.
