Why analyze redox when treating your pool with salt?

Opting for a saltwater pool is an increasingly popular choice for enjoying the pleasures of swimming while reducing the use of traditional chemicals. However, to maintain healthy and pleasant pool water, it is essential to understand and monitor the Redox or ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential). But why is it so important?

What is Redox?

Redox, or ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential), is a measure of a solution's ability to oxidize or reduce substances. Simply put, it indicates the disinfecting capacity of your pool water. This measurement is expressed in millivolts (mV) and provides a precise indication of the water's disinfection effectiveness.

 

Why monitor Redox?

Ensure effective disinfection 

Pool water is considered disinfected when the Redox is between 500 and 600 millivolts. In this range, disinfectants like the chlorine generated by your salt chlorinator are sufficiently active to eliminate bacteria and other microorganisms. If the Redox drops below 500mV, the risk of algae formation and bacterial proliferation increases, thereby compromising water quality.

Prevent irritation and damage 

Conversely, a Redox above 650-700 millivolts can cause discomfort for swimmers, such as skin and eye irritation. A level that is too high, above 700 millivolts, can even damage your pool liner. It is therefore essential to maintain the Redox within an optimal range to ensure a comfortable and safe swimming experience.

 

How to regulate Redox?

To maintain optimal Redox, it is recommended to link an ORP analysis device to your chlorinator. Here are the key steps to achieve this.

1. Installation of an ORP analysis device

Connect an ORP analysis device to your chlorinator. This device will continuously measure the water's Redox and send data to the chlorinator.

2. Setting a setpoint value

Program a Redox setpoint value on the analysis device. This value is usually set between 500 and 600 millivolts for optimal disinfection.

3. Automatic regulation 

The chlorinator will automatically adjust its chlorine production based on the measurements provided by the ORP analysis device. This means the chlorinator will only operate when necessary, which protects the chlorinator cell and prevents chlorine overproduction.
