Is your pool water losing its clarity? Are white deposits appearing on your salt chlorinator cell? Don't panic: regular maintenance is enough to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of your salt chlorinator. Here's Poolplanet's guide on when and how to clean your cell effectively.
How often should you clean your chlorinator cell?
A minimum of two cleanings per year is recommended to maintain good performance. The ideal times:
- in spring, when restarting the pool
- in autumn, at the end of the season or when winterizing
Mid-season, an additional cleaning may be necessary if you observe:
- green water or the presence of algae
- very hard local water that promotes deposits
- a chlorinator that is functioning less efficiently
Step 1: Prepare for cell cleaning
Before any intervention, cut off the electrical supply to the chlorinator and close the valves. For added safety, wear gloves and protective glasses if you are using a chemical product.
Step 2: Remove the chlorinator cell
Most models are easily removed. First, unscrew the side leading to the water outlet: this creates an air intake and limits splashes. Then empty the cell and inspect the electrodes to locate any deposits. Install an empty replacement cell to keep the circuit closed during cleaning.
Step 3: Deep clean the cell
A cleaning plug is essential for this step. For an eco-friendly cleaning, use household vinegar.
Cleaning method
- Screw the cell vertically onto the cleaning plug.
- Fill it with product until it covers the plates.
- Leave on for 3 to 6 hours depending on the state of the deposits.
- Rinse thoroughly with clear water before putting it back in place.
Step 4: Put the cell back in place
Replace the cell in its housing, reconnect the electrical connections, then reopen the water valves and restore power. Your chlorinator is ready to resume its disinfection role.
To remember
Regular cleaning of your chlorinator cell is key to maintaining clear water and avoiding performance issues. By following these simple steps, you ensure the longevity of your equipment and enjoy a consistently disinfected pool.
